Firstly, the Lemonade Diet, also known as the Master Cleanse Diet, allows you to consume a lemonade concoction, for the entire period of the diet. Quintessentially, you are required to drink at least 6. However, drinking and eating other food than the requirement is not allowed. On top of that, you would need to take both the salt water flush and the laxative tea in the morning and evening respectively. Click here to discover the Secrets to a Successful Master Cleanse. Below is the recipe for a single serving in the Lemonade Diet, if you need more help with the recipe, subscribe to our newsletter below: These ingredients must be properly mixed to come up with the correct lemonade concoction: o 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed organic lemon juiceo 2 tablespoons of grade B organic maple syrupo A 1. Distilled water in 1. You would need to drink at least 6- 1. There are no specific guidelines when you should drink the lemonade, but as a rule of thumb, drink it when you are hungry. If making a whole day’s supply is preferred, bear in mind lemon juice will spoil in 8 hours, regardless of placing the lemon juice in the fridge. Never use canned lemon juice, as canned lemon juice no longer contains the needed vitamins and nutrients. Our body needs all the nutrients that is only available from fresh lemon juice because only the lemonade will be consumed for the entire 1. Master Cleanse. Do remember to use organic lemons because non- organic lemons contain toxins like pesticides, otherwise it will defeat the purpose of doing the master cleanse. Other types of maple syrup are not appropriate for The Lemon Diet. Grade B Organic Maple Syrup should not be mistaken for commercial maple syrup used on pancakes, the two are different maple syrup. Grade B are also more superior in terms of nutritional value. Many websites are saying that as long as you are using the organic maple syrup, then it should be fine. But the truth is if you really can’t find the grade B Organic Maple Syrup, then you have no choice but to use the organic maple syrup. Regarded as one of the world’s best healing herbs, Cayenne Pepper increases the body’s blood flow. Has a rich amount of vitamins B and C. Cayenne Pepper is known to prevent heart attacks. Powdered Cayenne Pepper is highly recommended, compared to ungrounded Cayenne Pepper. Most of the time, participants find it difficult to acquire the taste of the powdered cayenne pepper. They couldn’t really drink the lemonade with the cayenne pepper and give up halfway. If you find it difficult to drink it too, here’s a tip. Don’t use the cayenne pepper pills manufactured by the pharmaceutical companies as most of the time, most of the nutritional value in the cayenne pepper will be gone. How much of cayenne pepper is needed in the capsules? Just a measure of 1/1. Salt Water Flush. When you are embark on the lemonade diet, you would need to do the salt water flush every morning during the cleanse. To prepare the salt water flush, you can mix a teaspoon of organic sea salt (non- iodized) with 2. If you find the solution hard to drink, you can try using distilled water under room temperature. Some of our readers mixed a little lemon juice with the salt water flush to make it easier to drink. Laxative Tea. You need non- caffeinated laxative tea for the lemonade diet. One usually drink the laxative tea just before they go to bed. You can get organic green or peppermint tea for the cleanse. If you are unable to withstand the salt water flush, you can drink the laxative tea in the morning too. But if you find that you do not have frequent bowel elimination, you might want to consider doing the salt water flush. One of the reasons that this cleanse is able to detoxify your body so well is because almost all of these ingredients are alkalizing. Lemons and cayenne pepper are one of the most alkalizing foods in the whole world. You will probably ask the question “Ain’t lemons acidic?”. If we test it using a litmus paper before we consume, yes it is acidic. But once it get digested in our stomach, it will form water, carbon dioxide and an inorganic compound. This inorganic compound is what they usually called it as an ash. The researchers would then test this ash to see whether if it is acidic or alkaline. The ash from lemons and cayenne pepper are alkaline whereas maple syrup is slightly acidic or neutral. As a whole, the entire lemonade concentrate is alkaline and that helps you to alkalize your body. If you have been eating the Standard American Diet for a long time, chances are your body is very acidic and that would lead to illnesses, diseases and cancer. After the lemonade diet, you may want to change your diet and lifestyle towards the alkaline way. That way, you would have a healthy, energized and a naturally great body. Check out this sample paleo diet menu for endurance athletes. The Paleo Diet Protein and the Athlete - How Much Do You Need? Whether running sprints, swimming long distances or lifting weights, athletes expend more energy than the average person and their bodies need additional nutrients to recover from intense physical activity. Protein plays an important role in an athlete's diet as it helps repair and strengthen muscle tissue. High protein diets are popular among athletes — especially those seeking a leaner, more defined physique.
But how much protein is really necessary? Overall Diet. While protein is critical in building muscle mass, more is not necessarily better. When you’re a new vegetarian, it’s easy to make mistakes. Chances are, you’ve already messed up by eating something you thought was safe, only to realize later. Simply eating large amounts of lean protein will not equate with a toned body. When determining protein requirements for athletes, it's important to look at the athlete's overall diet. Athletes who consume diets adequate in carbohydrate and fat end up using less protein for energy than those who consume a higher protein diet. This means that protein can go toward building and maintaining lean body mass. Athletes need to ensure that they are also meeting needs for carbs and fat, not just protein. Activity. Muscle growth happens only when exercise and diet are combined. For example, research has shown that timing of protein intake plays a role. Eating high- quality protein (such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy or soy) within two hours after exercise — either by itself or with a carbohydrate — enhances muscle repair and growth. Duration and intensity of the activity is also a factor when it comes to protein needs. Because they are building muscle, power athletes require a higher level of protein consumption than endurance athletes. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dietitians of Canada and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend 1. Protein intake should be spaced throughout the day and after workouts. Are Powders and Supplements Needed? Most athletes can get the recommended amount of protein through food alone, without the use of supplements. Protein powders and supplements are great for convenience, but are not necessary, even for elite athletic performance. For example, Rossi works with athletes at the University of Virginia and only relies on protein powders when athletes need immediate protein right after a workout and don't have time for a meal. POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE KMnO4: The permanganate ion is a strong oxidizing agent. Potassium Permanganate is a strong oxidizer that when added to water will give a deep. Figure out how to determine your metabolic type as how to feed it too! It's been confirmed, every type of food is not good for every type of metabolism! It produces injury through several mechanisms, including thermal injury to the upper airway. However, the 13 Day Metabolism diet is a fad diet. Smoke Inhalation Injury: Practice Essentials, Background, Pathophysiology. The 3 primary mechanisms that lead to injury in smoke inhalation are thermal damage, asphyxiation, and pulmonary irritation. The combination of these mechanisms can explain the pathophysiologic responses that alter the airway microenvironment with parenchymal damage and predispose smoke inhalation victims to respiratory insufficiency. Thermal damage. Thermal damage is usually limited to the oropharyngeal area, in part due to the poor conductivity of air. In addition, heat dissipation in the upper airways and laryngeal reflexes help protect the lower lung areas from direct thermal injury. Animal experiments have shown that 1. Steam, volatile gases, explosive gases, and the aspiration of hot liquids provide some exceptions, as moist air has a much greater heat- carrying capacity than dry air. Asphyxiation. Tissue hypoxia can occur via several mechanisms. Combustion in a closed space can consume significant amounts of oxygen, decreasing the ambient concentration of oxygen to as low as 1. For victims in that setting, the decrease in fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) leads to hypoxia, even if they have adequate circulation and oxygen- carrying capacity. If sufficiently severe, hypoxia can lead to multiorgan dysfunction, which substantially raises morbidity and mortality. Carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon- containing compounds, such as wood, coal, and gasoline. It is a major component of the smoke produced in open fires. CO causes tissue hypoxia by decreasing the oxygen- carrying capacity of the blood. Hemoglobin binds CO with an affinity more than 2. Other mechanisms contribute, as well. Interaction of CO with myocardial myoglobin results in decreased myocardial contractility. A classic study demonstrated that dogs breathing 1. CO died within 1 hour after carboxyhemoglobin (CO- Hgb) levels reached 5. However, exchange transfusion with blood containing 8. Research reveals that blood donation is a good way to avoid having too much iron, as this condition poses serious health risks to your body. CO- Hgb to otherwise healthy dogs resulted in no toxic effects, despite resultant CO- Hgb levels of 5. This further supports the notion that CO toxicity is not dependent on CO- Hgb formation or, in other words, solely upon a relative anemia. The therapeutic effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in these patients has been traced to improvement in mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, impairment of adherence of neutrophils to cerebral vasculature (decreases inflammation), and preservation of adenosine triphosphate activity. Cyanide. Cyanide (CN) gas can be produced by combustion of the following: Plastics. Polyurethane. Nitriles. Rubber. Paper products. The incomplete combustion of nitrogen- containing materials releases hydrogen CN (HCN), a colorless gas with a bitter almond odor that is detectable by 4. The burning of cotton generates 1. Affected cells convert to anaerobic metabolism, and lactic acidosis ensues. The organs most sensitive to cellular hypoxia are the central nervous system (CNS) and the heart. The CNS reacts to low concentrations of cyanide by promoting hyperventilation, thereby increasing exposure. Consider CN toxicity in all patients with smoke inhalation who have CNS or cardiovascular findings. Cyanide toxicity is difficult to confirm but is frequently concominant with CO toxicity. Its presence can be inferred by the presence of lactic acidosis in the right clinical setting. Even mild degrees of CN poisoning can cause delayed neurological sequelae in survivors and permanent disability including the following: Seizures. Various extrapyramidal syndromes. Dystonia. Postanoxic coma. Methemoglobinemia. Methemoglobinemia occurs in fire due to heat denaturation of hemoglobin, oxides produced in fire, and methemoglobin- forming materials such as nitrites. Methemoglobinemia is less common in smoke inhalation injury than CN and CO toxicity. The pathophysiologic consequences of methemoglobin formation are a decrease in the oxygen- carrying capacity of the blood and a shift of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve to the left, similar to carboxyhemoglobin. Pulmonary irritation. Pulmonary injury from smoke inhalation is characterized by both hyperinflation and atelectasis. Debris from cellular necrosis, inflammatory exudate, and shed epithelium combine with carbonaceous material to narrow airways that are already compromised by edema. Reflex bronchoconstriction further exacerbates the obstruction. Both inspiratory and expiratory resistance are increased, and the premature closure of small airways occurs, producing hyperinflation and air trapping. Surfactant production and activity are both impaired, leading to alveolar collapse and segmental atelectasis. Low- pressure pulmonary edema plays an important role in the development of lung injury from smoke inhalation. Damage to the alveolar capillary membrane increases its permeability, and intravascular leakage into the pulmonary interstitium ensues. Eventually, increased lymphatic flow may be overwhelmed, resulting in alveolar edema. Alveoli fill with thick, bloody fluid. Loss of compliance, further atelectasis, and increasing edema can result in severe ventilation- perfusion mismatch and hypoxia. Pulmonary injury may also occur as a direct result of hypoxia. The decrease in ambient oxygen tension that occurs during fires in closed spaces depends on the substances that are burned. Gasoline self- extinguishes when oxygen concentrations fall below 1. Other substances may continue to undergo thermal decomposition, further decreasing ambient oxygen tension. Even small decrements in oxygen tension have a potentiating effect on inhaled asphyxiant gases, such as CO and HCN, resulting in severe lactic acidosis and a high fatality rate. Inhalation of toxic products triggers a cascade of effects in the lower lung areas, such as the following . Ammonia produces alkaline injury, while sulfur dioxide and chlorine gas cause acid injuries. Other chemicals act via different mechanisms; for instance, acrolein causes free radical formation and protein denaturation. Highly soluble substances such as acrolein, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, and hydrogen chloride cause injury to the upper airway and cause immediate symptoms. Substances with intermediate solubility, such as chlorine and isocyanates, cause both upper and lower respiratory tract injury with more delayed symptoms. Phosgene (a colorless gas with oxidant properties) and oxides of nitrogen have low water solubility and cause diffuse parenchymal injury, with symptoms sometimes delayed up to a day or more. Days after the injury, the risk of bacterial infection increases markedly. Ciliary function is impaired, leading to accumulation of airway debris. Macrophages within the alveoli are destroyed, allowing bacteria to proliferate. Disruption of the epithelial barrier by ulcerations and necrosis further facilitates the development of pneumonia. Smokes associated with the military or industry. Smokes and obscurants long have been used by the military as a means of hiding troops, equipment, and certain areas from view of the opposing forces and from engagement by weapons with electro- optical control systems. Although smokes typically are not used as direct chemical agents, they may produce toxic injury to skin, eyes, and all parts of the respiratory tract. Nitrogen dioxide exists as a mixture of nitrogen dioxide, a reddish brown gas, and nitrogen tetroxide, a colorless gas. Other forms of nitrogen oxide include nitrous oxide, which is a common anesthetic or (when inhaled without oxygen) asphyxiant, and nitric oxide, which quickly decomposes to nitrogen dioxide in the presence of moisture. Inhalation of nitric oxide causes the formation of methemoglobin. Inhalation of nitrogen dioxide results in the formation of nitrite, which leads to a fall in blood pressure, production of methemoglobin, and cellular hypoxia. Inhalation of high concentrations causes rapid death without the formation of pulmonary edema. More severe exposures result in production of yellow frothy fluid in the nasal passages, mouth, and trachea and marked pulmonary edema, which may be fatal. The symptoms following the inhalation of NOx are mostly due to nitrogen dioxide. Zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a constituent of HC smoke, also termed . A number of reports have been published on various lung abnormalities occurring in military personnel and firefighters exposed to smoke from HC smoke bombs during training drills. HC smoke is created by combustion of a mixture of equal amounts of hexachloroethane, zinc oxide, and approximately 7% grained aluminum or aluminum powder. When ignited, these release zinc chloride, and the pyrotechnic mixture of zinc chloride and hexachloroethane rapidly absorbs moisture from the air to form a grayish white smoke. Other chemicals also are released in the combustion process, such as chlorinated hydrocarbons (eg, phosgene and carbon tetrachloride), chlorine gas, CO, and several other compounds. These most likely contribute to the observed respiratory effects. HC has a sweetish acrid odor, even at moderate concentrations. HC exposure can produce a gradual decrease in total lung capacity, vital capacity, and diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO). It also is associated with the development of pulmonary edema, increased airway resistance, and decreased compliance. These changes were found to be reversible with cessation of episodic exposure. In a retrospective cohort study of 2. Hsu et al reported significant impairment of pulmonary function within 3- 2. Centriacinar inflammation was seen histologically, indicating evidence of pulmonary damage. An interesting study by Marrs et al involving mice, rats, and guinea pigs demonstrated a positive association of alveologenic carcinoma in a dose- response trend to HC smoke as well as a variety of inflammatory changes. This raises the suspicion of HC as a potential human carcinogen. Making in ankylosing spondylitis and. Research Studies Ankylosing Spondylitis and. Many ankylosing spondylitis. Risk higher in patients with ankylosing spondylitis: Study. Who Is Affected by Ankylosing Spondylitis? Ankylosing spondylitis affects about 0. Although it can occur at any age, spondylitis most often strikes men in their teens and 2. It is less common and generally milder in women and more common in some Native American tribes. What Are the Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis? The most common early symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis include: Pain and stiffness. Constant pain and stiffness in the low back, buttocks, and hips that continue for more than three months. Spondylitis often starts around the sacroiliac joints, where the sacrum (the lowest major part of the spine) joins the ilium bone of the pelvis in the lower back region. Bony fusion. Ankylosing spondylitis can cause an overgrowth of the bones, which may lead to abnormal joining of bones, called . Fusion of the ribs to the spine or breastbone may limit a person's ability to expand his or her chest when taking a deep breath. Pain in ligaments and tendons. Spondylitis also may affect some of the ligaments and tendons that attach to bones. Tendonitis (inflammation of the tendon) may cause pain and stiffness in the area behind or beneath the heel, such as the Achilles tendon at the back of the ankle. Ankylosing spondylitis is a systemic disease, which means symptoms may not be limited to the joints. People with the condition also may have fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Eye inflammation (redness and pain) occurs in some people with spondylitis. In rare cases, lung and heart problems also may develop. Continued. What Causes Ankylosing Spondylitis? Although the cause of ankylosing spondylitis is unknown, there is a strong genetic or family link. Most, but not all, people with spondylitis carry a gene called HLA- B2. Although people carrying this gene are more likely to develop spondylitis, it is also found in up to 1. How Is Ankylosing Spondylitis Diagnosed? The diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis is based on several factors, including: Symptoms. Findings of a physical exam. X- rays of the back and pelvis. Measurements of the chest when breathing. Results of lab tests. How Is Ankylosing Spondylitis Treated? There is no cure for ankylosing spondylitis, but there are treatments that can reduce discomfort and improve function. The goals of treatment are to reduce pain and stiffness, maintain a good posture, prevent deformity, and preserve the ability to perform normal activities. When properly treated, people with ankylosing spondylitis may lead fairly normal lives. Under ideal circumstances, a team approach to treat spondylitis is recommended. Members of the treatment team typically include the patient, doctor, physical therapist, and occupational therapist. In patients with severe deformities, osteotomy and fusion can be done. Physical and occupational therapy. Early intervention with physical and occupational therapy is important to maintain function and minimize deformity. Exercise. A program of daily exercise helps reduce stiffness, strengthen the muscles around the joints and prevent or minimize the risk of disability. Deep breathing exercises may help keep the chest cage flexible. Swimming is an excellent form of exercise for people with ankylosing spondylitis. Medications. Certain drugs help provide relief from pain and stiffness, and allow patients to perform their exercises with minimal discomfort. Nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) - - such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin - - are the most commonly used drugs for spondylitis treatment. In moderate to severe cases, other drugs may be added to the treatment regimen. Disease- modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), such as methotrexate (Rheumatrex), can be used when NSAIDs alone are not enough to reduce the inflammation, stiffness, and pain. In addition, relatively new drugs called biologics - - adalimumab (Humira), adalimumab- atto (Amjevita), a biosimilar to Humira, certolizumab pegol (Cimzia), etanercept (Enbrel), etanercept- szzs (Erelzi), a biosimilar to Enbrel, golimumab (Simponi Aria, Simponi), infliximab (Remicade), and infliximab- dyyb (Inflectra), a biosimilar to Remicade, and secukinimab (Cosentyx)- - have been FDA- approved for treating ankylosing spondylitis. Also, the antidepressant. Cymbalta has been approved for chronic back pain as well. Steroid injections into the joint or tendon may be helpful in some cases. Surgery. Artificial joint replacement surgery may be a treatment option for some people with advanced joint disease affecting the hips or knees. Continued. In addition, people with spondylitis are urged to not smoke or chew tobacco products because smoking aggravates the condition. Certainly, all of the other reasons why doctors discourage smoking also apply here as well. People with spondylitis are encouraged to sleep on a firm mattress with the back straight. Placing large pillows under the head is discouraged, since it may promote neck fusion in the flexed position. Similarly, propping the legs up on pillows should be avoided because it may lead to hip or knee fusion in the bent position. Choose chairs, tables, and other work surfaces that will help avoid slumping or stooping. Armchairs are preferred over chairs without arms. Since those with ankylosing spondylitis could easily hurt their rigid necks or backs, special care should be taken to avoid sudden impact, such as jumping or falling. Web. MD Medical Reference. Eye and bowel problems may also occur. Back pain is a characteristic symptom of AS, and it often comes and goes. AS is a type of seronegative spondyloarthropathy, meaning that tests show no presence of rheumatoid factor (RF) antibodies. Treatments may improve symptoms and prevent worsening. This may include medication, exercise, and surgery. Medications used include NSAIDs, steroids, DMARDs such as sulfasalazine, and biologic agents such as infliximab. Males are more often affected than females. Systemic features are common, with weight loss, fever, or fatigue often present. Arthritis in the hips and shoulders may also occur. When the condition presents before the age of 1. This is thought to be due to the association that both AS and uveitis have with the inheritance of the HLA- B2. Inflammation of the prostate occurs with increased frequency in men. Cardiovascular involvement may include inflammation of the aorta, aortic valve insufficiency or disturbances of the heart's electrical conduction system. Lung involvement is characterized by progressive fibrosis of the upper portion of the lung. Pathophysiology. Approximately 9. AS express the HLA- B2. HLA- B2. 7 genotype contract the disease. Autoantibodies specific for AS have not been identified. Anti- neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) are associated with AS, but do not correlate with disease severity. The PTGER4 gene codes for the prostaglandin EP4 receptor (EP4), one of four receptors for prostaglandin E2. Activation of EP4 promotes bone remodeling and deposition (see EP4, bone) and EP4 is highly expressed at vertebral column sites involved in ankylosing spondylitis. These findings suggest that excessive EP4 activation contributes to pathological bone remodeling and deposition in ankylosing spondylitis and that the A/G variant rs. PTGER4 predisposes to this disease, possibly by influencing EP4's production or expression pattern. Inflammatory lesions of the anterior chest wall are shown (curved arrows). Inflammatory changes are seen in the lower thoracic spine and L1 (arrows). Ankylosing spondylitis is a member of the more broadly defined disease axial spondyloarthritis. Diagnosis of non- radiologic axial spondyloarthritis is therefore more difficult and is based on the presence of several typical disease features. Options for earlier diagnosis are tomography and MRI of the sacroiliac joints, but the reliability of these tests is still unclear. Lateral X- ray of the mid back in ankylosing spondylitis. T1- weighted MRI with fat suppression after administration of gadolinium contrast showing sacroiliitis in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis. Blood parameters. In other words, some people with AS have normal levels of CRP and ESR, despite experiencing a significant amount of inflammation in their bodies. Genetic testing. Those with the HLA- B2. HLA- B2. 7, demonstrated in a blood test, can occasionally help with diagnosis, but in itself is not diagnostic of AS in a person with back pain. Over 9. 0% of people that have been diagnosed with AS are HLA- B2. African Americans with AS possess HLA- B2. AS who are of Mediterranean descent. The BASDAI can help to establish a diagnosis of AS in the presence of other factors such as HLA- B2. X- ray or MRI- evident involvement of the sacroiliac joints. All of these have potentially serious side effects. Pain- relieving drugs come in two major classes: Medications used to treat the progression of the disease include the following: Disease- modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) such as sulfasalazine can be used in people with peripheral arthritis. For axial involvement, evidence does not support sulfasalazine. Generally, systemic corticosteroids were not used due to lack of evidence. Local injection with corticosteroid can be used for certain people with peripheral arthritis. An alternative may be the newer, orally- administered non- biologic apremilast, which inhibits TNF- . Surgical correction is also possible for those with severe flexion deformities (severe downward curvature) of the spine, particularly in the neck, although this procedure is considered very risky. In addition, AS can have some manifestations which make anesthesia more complex. Changes in the upper airway can lead to difficulties in intubating the airway, spinal and epidural anesthesia may be difficult owing to calcification of ligaments, and a small number of people have aortic insufficiency. The stiffness of the thoracic ribs results in ventilation being mainly diaphragm- driven, so there may also be a decrease in pulmonary function. Physical therapy. Some therapeutic exercises include. Some cases may have times of active inflammation followed by times of remission resulting in minimal disability while others never have times of remission and have acute inflammation and pain, leading to significant disability. This not only limits mobility but reduces the affected person's quality of life. Complete fusion of the spine can lead to a reduced range of motion and increased pain, as well as total joint destruction which could lead to a joint replacement. Over a long- term period, osteopenia or osteoporosis of the AP spine may occur, causing eventual compression fractures and a back . In compression fractures of the vertebrae, paresthesia is a complication due to the inflammation of the tissue surrounding nerves. Organs commonly affected by AS, other than the axial spine and other joints, are the heart, lungs, eyes, colon, and kidneys. Other complications are aortic regurgitation, Achilles tendinitis, AV node block and amyloidosis. Very rare complications involve neurologic conditions such as the cauda equina syndrome. Increased spinal kyphosis will lead to a forward and downward shift in center of mass (COM). This shift in COM has been shown to be compensated by increased knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion. The gait of someone with ankylosing spondylitis often has a cautious pattern because they have decreased ability to absorb shock, and they cannot see the horizon. Fitbit: The Official Fitbit Reviewby Marc David. Hats off to to a company called Fitbit! It's rare in this day that a company can improve upon an existing technology. However, they took something as simple as a . The Fitbit contains a 3. D motion sensor like the one found in the Nintendo Wii. The Fitbit tracks your motion in three dimensions and converts this into useful information about your daily activities. You can wear the Fitbit on your waist, in your pocket or on undergarments. At night, you can wear the Fitbit clipped to the included wristband in order to track your sleep. Anytime you walk by the included wireless base station, data from your Fitbit is silently uploaded in the background. I'd like to share my experience with the Fitbit in hopes it you might find it useful. As I type, the Fitbit is telling me that in order to reach my target goals, after this post goes live, I'm going to need to get a few more minutes of activity in if I want that body of my dreams (cliche but true). When the Fitbit arrived at my doorstep, I had already signed up for the free fitness tracker portion of the website. Without even owning the little device, you can do such things as: * Log activities* Log food* Track weight. All displayed in a neat historical and daily graph. Nothing fancy but simple. In my world, feedback is EVERYTHING. I thrive on it so I can continually adjust, beat my last efforts and improve. The less I think about the little things, the more I can focus on what matters. While the free portion is the site is comparable to many other sites, you can: * search from an extensive list of foods* add your own custom foods* see foods that others have entered and make publicly available. But just keep reading .. The REAL power of the Fitbit is the device itself and the information it sends back to the wireless base station. With Fitbit, you can monitor such things as: * Intraday Calories* Steps Taken* Miles Walked* Record Specific Activity* Sleep Patterns* Leaderboard Activity. Now imagine that you sat down and calculated how many calories you need per day to reach your goals. You guess about your metabolism and if you are lucky, you might get to use tools that take into account your perceived activity factor. Here's the REAL deal with the Fitbit that drives me crazy as I love the continual feedback. Intraday Calories: How active are you really vs. I work out quite hard during my 6. I sweat, I push myself, I have fantastic workouts on average. But be honest. Sure, for those 6. I'm #1 on the leaderboard but for the rest of the day, I'm quite sedentary. I find myself sitting a lot in front of the computer (answering emails, forum posts, etc). All worthwhile activity but it does change your entire calculation! If you think you are leading this wildly active lifestyle and you pick formulas that take that into account, you will be frustrated over time as to why you might not be gaining muscle or burning fat. However, with something that monitors your activity during the day, you can quickly adjust as necessary to keep that calorie surplus or calorie deficit in check. Let me repeat what I think is the most important aspect of Fitbit. However, what it will not to is show you your actual level of activity. You may be overeating or undereating! Many people place themselves into a moderately active lifestyle without taking into account they sit most of the day. Fitbit gives you a very good visual feedback of what's happening. How accurate is the device? From my tests, it's within 1. Harris- Benedict Equation. Sometimes I'm more active and sometimes I'm less. I can adjust my intake based on what I'm doing vs. You just can't adjust quickly using a formula but you can using a feedback device like Fitbit. Quick Note: I've found that Monday thru Friday I'm eating what I've calculated but I am not as active as I am on Saturday and Sunday. Interesting to note, on the weekends I'm more active but eat less as I'm out more. Knowing this tidbit, I'm able to adjust my weekday calories to fit more of my actual exertion and attempt to eat more on weekends. Without Fitbit, I'd be overeating 5 days a week and undereating two days. Not many people re- work formulas based on the intraday activity. To me, that's the real power of device. Keeping me honest about my level of activity. It won't be so accurate on activities like 6. It can't tell you how much weight you lifted, or how many reps you did. It doesn't know such but you can manually record that activity in your log via the website to compensate. It does a pretty accurate job of most other walking and moving type activity. It's movement based so technically you might say you went to sleep and lie there for 2. It seems to record my own sleep patters quite well. In my short experiments, I've found that I feel the most refreshed when I am able to record 8 hours of sleep. Or at least within 1. Too much more and I feel groggy. Less and I wake up ready for a nap. Generally speaking, people need between 8- 1. But the real way to determine that is for you to record your sleep over a period of time and find your ideal situation. For me, if I can get 8 hours, I'm doing great. This turned out to be a surprise feature. It comes with a wrist wrap that secures the Fitbit to your wrist at night. Some have found it too small if you are big boned but I find it to work. It's made of soft cloth and fits securely and snug. You could secure it to your clothing but if you are a stomach sleeper, that could prove uncomfortable. The #1 Feature of Fitbit: The ability to deliver me a stream of continual feedback so that I may adjust my caloric intake and/or activity to meet a short term target. Most important of all, I can see my past records and strive to beat them or at least challenge myself. Please understand, I am biased and I love this device. If you want an unbiased review, you will need to find somebody who will write a review about this tracking device that has never owned or or just saw it at the gym and learned about it through a brief conversation. This device isn't for everyone but it sure works for feedback junkies or keeping you honest. What makes Fitbit stand out besides the technology? There are NO FEES to upload your data. Once you purchase the device, you pay nothing after that to keep updating and getting your stats. Okay, so do I wear the Fitbit all the time? Pretty much except in the shower as it is not waterproof. I've found placing it on my gym shorts on the side is always out of the way of my weight workouts Using the sleep band at night is not a problem. Hence, I am able to get a good rating of my daily activity. It becomes embarrassing as I stare at the pie chart that tells me I have 7 hours of sedentary activity. At the same time, it is a motivator for me to get up and take breaks and keep moving. FAQ: How accurate is the Fitbit Tracker? The Tracker will give you a good sense of how your activity levels change from day to day. We've tuned the accuracy of the Fitbit step counting functionality over hundreds of tests with multiple different body types. For most wearers, the Fitbit should be roughly 9. We spent a lot of time ensuring that this accuracy is achieved even when you wear the Fitbit loosely in your pocket. It's not going to be that accurate for things like biking, but the website will allow you to manually log activities, so that an estimated calorie burn for your biking can be included in your daily totals. If you are only doing the biking for an hour or so a day, the Fitbit will give you a good overview of your activities for the other 2. The Fitbit is really for people to get a general sense of their day and get motivation from improvements in their general day to day trends. Column chromatography is a commonly used purification technique in labs across the world. Done right it can simply and quickly isolate desired compounds from a mixture. But like many aspects of practical chemistry, the quick and efficient setting up and running of a column is something that can take years to master. Here we present some of the tips and tricks of the trade to help you optimize all the experimental parameters to get the best separation of your compounds. Columns are generally used in organic and inorganic labs to remove unreacted starting material or isolate one desired product from a range of by- products after a reaction has been performed. To do this, the mixed sample is passed down a vertical glass tube packed with silica or alumina and collected in small portions, or fractions, at the end. The various components of the sample are separated into their different compound types through interaction with the solvent and the silica. Polar compounds will interact with the silica more strongly than non- polar ones so will come off the column, or elute, after non- polar compounds. When a sample contains compounds with similar polarity, the separation between then can be small and recovering all of your clean sample can become a challenge. While correctly packing your column is arguably the most important experimental factor, there remain several other factors that can be optimized to help you achieve the best separation possible in the shortest amount of time. Here we guide you through how to choose the best solvent system for your sample, and look at how much silica you will need and in which size column. It is basically used for the separation of organic compounds. The separation process is carried out depending on the. Choosing a Solvent System. This is the most difficult choice to make and the most important. In every organic chemistry lab there are a range of solvents to choose from.
So where do you begin? Column chromatography, particularly flash chromatography, is normally carried out with a mixture of two solvents as the mobile phase: one polar, one non- polar. Occasionally, a single solvent can be used or a mixture of three solvents is needed. Here, separation depends on. Separating Compounds by Column Chromatography Column chromatography is similar to TLC in that a mixture of compounds can be separated by being carried by a mobile. Many people have their favorite solvents systems and will automatically start with these and adjust the mix as needed. Common solvents and solvent systems are given in Tab. Common solvents and solvent systems for column and flash chromatography. To get a good separation between your product and any impurities and, where possible, to use as little solvent as possible, the key is to test potential solvent systems before setting up your column. To do this, you will need to run thin layer chromatography (TLC) using glass or aluminium sheets coated with silica (the aluminium sheets are cheaper, so are more common). To Run a Test TLCYou will need: TLC sheet. Scissors/Stanley knife/box cutter. Pencil. Glass container such as a small beaker with watch glass or petri dish as a lid. Solvent(s) to be tested. Capillary TLC spotter or micropipette (see: How to Make a Capillary TLC Spotter)Tweezers. UV lamp or potassium permanganate dip to visualize. Method: Cut the TLC sheet into strips approximately 2 cm x 7 cm. Draw a pencil line on the short side, approximately 0. Do not use pen as the ink will dissolve in the organic solvent and separate out, obscuring or contaminating your results. Pour the solvent(s) to be tested into the glass container. The solvent should be 2–3 mm deep so that the spotted sample and the line are not submerged. This ensures the sample does not dissolve into the solvent and travel up the TLC plate with the solvent. Use a capillary spotter or micropipette to “spot” some of your sample onto the line: Touch the spotter or pipette to the silica TLC plate gently and allow capillary action to draw the sample down onto the plate. It is better to touch the spotter to the TLC 2–3 times for short amounts of time (> 1s) than to hold it against the plate for a longer time. The resulting spot should be 1–2 mm in diameter. Stand the TLC strip in the container with the solvent(s). Wait and check regularly. Do not move or disturb the plate or the TLC container as this will cause ripples in the solvent and irregular progress of the solvent front up the plate. When the solvent front is 0. Allow the solvent on the plate to evaporate, and then visualize the plate by using either a UV lamp or potassium permanganate dip. Mark in pencil where the spots are as the initially intense colors from the permanganate dip can fade over time and it is hard to manveuver to measure a Rf value (see below) under a UV lamp. You can now determine whether your sample components will separate in the selected solvent. If you get poor separation, choose another solvent system and try again. What is Good Separation?/What Am I Looking For on my TLC? The end result should be a solvent system that moves the target compound about 1/3 of the total solvent path (Rf value between 0. Fig. 1). Figure 1. Typical TLC plate layout and definition of Rf value. A solvent system that gives an Rf between 0. Don't be tempted to use a solvent system with a higher Rf – especially if this is the only solvent system you have tested – as a fast elution can result in an impurity being masked by another spot (Fig. Figure 2. Choice between fast elution (left) and missing a hidden impurity (right). While it is possible for a spot to have a Rf that is too high, the opposite is also true if the desired compound is one of the later- eluting spots. Here it is possible for the spot to be too slow- moving (low Rf). You may be tempted to use this solvent system to avoid the potential contamination that comes with a worse separation but a higher Rf for your product. This will normally prove to be a mistake. The longer your compound spends on the column, the more chance it has to degrade and the less product you will recover. Trying to isolate a compound with a low Rf value will also take a long time and a lot of solvent. In this case, it is better to attempt a slightly messier separation and use more silica (see below). Figure 3. Clean separation (left) versus faster elution (right) when product is second spot. When you have found a solvent system that gives reasonable separation, you should take a few moments to look at the shape of the spots. Ideally, the spots should be round and distinct from each other (Fig. Spots with long tails on a TLC plate can translate to wide bands and possibly to overlapping compounds on the actual column. If you have tried several solvent systems and cannot find one that gives perfectly round spots, don't worry. As long as the separation between the spots is good (Fig. In situation 3 in Fig. This is not recommended if the yield is important. Figure 4. Possible spot shapes on a TLC plate. Other Factors to Consider When Choosing a Solvent System. You will sometimes find that two or more solvents systems give adequate separation of your compounds or you will see people run a column with a solvent system that gives adequate, but not the best separation on the TLC plate. So what affected their decision? There are two other factors to consider: price and boiling point. Price. If two solvent systems give similarly good separation, the cheapest of the non- halogenated solvents should be used. Typically, this will result in a hexanes: ethyl acetate mixture. If you are unsure of the relative cost of a solvent, a good rule of thumb is to look at the size of the container. Cheaper solvents are generally purchased in larger quantities than their more expensive counterparts. It is worth noting here that some cheap hexanes or petroleum ethers, especially those in plastic containers, often contain saturated hydrocarbons that are hard to remove and can make interpretation of NMR spectra difficult, especially in the 1–1. In these cases, the solvent can be distilled prior to use (time consuming), or you can use a better- grade solvent (more expensive). Boiling Point. The argument for choosing between two solvents with similar separation and different boiling points is simple: Always chose the lower boiling solvent. You will save yourself a lot of time and effort in the long run as higher- boiling solvents will take longer to evaporate and require heating or reduced pressure to remove when you try to recover your compound from solution. Choosing the Correct Size Column. Some would argue that this is the least important factor when setting up a column. Indeed, in theory it is possible to use a very thin column with a long length of silica or a thick column with shorter length of silica to equal effect (Fig. Figure 5. Choice of column size is less important than the amount of silica used. However, in practice, most people will choose a column size that allows them to fill column approximately one- third to a half full of silica – not including the solvent reservoir (Fig. This, of course, depends on how much silica you will be using. Figure 6. Rough guide for choice of column diameter. How Much Silica Do I Need? How much silica you need is determined by how much of your sample you have to separate. The ratio of silica to sample does not have to be exact, but should be in the right area to prevent waste of both time and resources. It is also advisable to measure the silica by weight rather than volume as the density of silica can vary depending on type. The other factor affecting the amount of silica required is how easy or difficult the separation is going to be. This is determined by running TLC as part of the process of choosing a solvent (see above). The harder the separation, the larger the silica weight to sample weight ratio will be. Good guidelines are given in Tab. Guidelines for silica to sample ratio depending on the ease of the separation to be performed. What Next? Once you have your solvent system picked out, know how much silica you need, and have found a column of a suitable size, you are ready to begin packing your column. Of course, every column is unique and not all will give TLC results like the idealized ones shown here. Tips for Weight Loss, Diet Plans & Weight Management. Diet Plans & Programs. It is important to look for a plan that includes strategies for maintaining weight loss. There is nothing worse than regaining the weight that took you an enormous amount of hard work and patience to lose. There is no clear definition for what constitutes a fad diet. Merriam- Webster defines a fad as . Long- term success requires permanent changes in behavior, diet, and activity. Introduction to weight loss. Whether you are trying to lose 5 pounds or more than 5. Remembering the following simple healthy eating guidelines and putting them into practice can lead to weight reduction without the aid of any special diet plans, weight loss programs, fitness books, or medications. Our body weight is determined by the amount of energy that we take in as food and the amount of energy we expend in the activities of our day. Energy is measured in calories. Metabolism is the sum of all chemical processes within the body that sustain life. Your basal metabolic rate is the number of calories (amount of energy) you need for your body to carry out necessary functions. If your weight remains constant, this is likely a sign that you are taking in the same amount of calories that you burn daily. If you're slowly gaining weight over time, it is likely that your caloric intake is greater than the number of calories you burn through your daily activities. Every adult is in control of the amount of food he or she consumes each day, so our intake of calories is something we can control. To a major degree, we can also control our output of energy, or the number of calories we burn each day. The number of calories we burn each day is dependent upon the following: Our basal metabolic rate (BMR), the number of calories we burn per hour simply by being alive and maintaining body functions. Our level of physical activity. For some people, due to genetic (inherited) factors or other health conditions, the resting metabolic rate (RMR) can be slightly higher or lower than average. Our weight also plays a role in determining how many calories we burn at rest - - the more calories are required to maintain your body in its present state, the greater your body weight. A 1. 00- pound person requires less energy (food) to maintain body weight than a person who weighs 2. Lifestyle and work habits partially determine how many calories we need to eat each day. Someone whose job involves heavy physical labor will naturally burn more calories in a day than someone who sits at a desk most of the day (a sedentary job). For people who do not have jobs that require intense physical activity, exercise or increased physical activity can increase the number of calories burned. As a rough estimate, an average woman 3. A man of the same age requires about 2,2. Participating in a moderate level of physical activity (exercising three to five days per week) requires about 2. Medically Reviewed by a Doctor on 1.
